The Tunes

  • Listen! Ride 'Em High (For My Friends in the C.I.A.)
  • Listen! Ballad of a Broken Train (The Meanest Man who Spent Time in Maine)
  • Listen! Midnight Special

I met Matt in New York City during the Republican National Convention of '04. The Republican Party was not welcome, and tens of thousands of New Yorkers wanted them to know it. Matt and his friend showed me around Manhattan, and Matt played a few tunes. I produced this report, containing some of Matt's music. It aired on No Censorship Radio on WMBR-FM.

My New York RNC recordings were all made with a Sony Mini Disk recorder using the Sony ECM-MS907 binaural microphone. I used the mic sideways, separating the vocal and the guitar, then fiddling with the mixdown.

The background noise was loud. It was recorded at St. Marks Church, a protest "convergence center" where lots of stuff was happening. There were tons of activists and protestors, lots of arrests and abomb scare (rumored to be a police hoax.) Hear my report for WMBR News for more on that.
