If on-location or documentary recording is compared to casting a sculpture, ...to making a copy of an existing thing, then studio work can be compared to free sculpting, as in clay. Another analogy would be photography versus painting. The studio itself, and all its contents together become the instrument.
Similar in spirit to dedicated video production, studio recording is done for the sake of the product, not just as a by-product of an event. This means the Director the Engineer, the Artist, or Producer can call for retakes and all sorts of luxuries, from retakes to tofu pizza breaks to adjusting the room accoustics.
Studio recording is used to get clean tracks, often for subsequent assembly and mixing with oither tracks. Another related technique is synchronized multitracking, where performers hear previous tracks played back, and add their contribution in a new recording layer.

492 Cafe has a modest studio space, a wooden room dampened with foam for reasonable accoustic performance. We can accomodate several performers. With multiracking techniques, it is not always necessary for all the performers to be present at one time. One of our long-term projects has encompased a dozen recording sessions, and gawd knows how many editing sessions. Maybe some day we'll even finish and release it.
